Scripture: Leviticus 20:26
'Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine.
Commentary:
God was speaking to Moses, and instructing him on what to say to the sons of Israel regarding the way in which they should conduct themselves regarding moral issues. The purpose of the instructions where to make a distinction between those who were the children of God, and those that were not. God said because the people were His, there was a certain standard that He expected of them. They were not to be like other nations, because they had been set apart to be holy unto the Lord. Therefore, the people that God had chosen for Himself received instructions from Moses on how to be holy, as God was. If God had said be holy, but not given instructions, the people would not have known what holy was. Therefore, it was spelled out to them word-by-word, to know what the expectations of God where.
Reflection:
God has given us His word for us to read, study, and meditate upon daily. He left us step-by-step instructions on how we would be able to live a life of holiness unto Him. The life of holiness is not just some pie-in-the-sky dream that we cannot attain too. God would not have said be holy, if He had not already given us the ability to be holy as He is. God said this at a time when the Holy Spirit had not come on the earth, through the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Therefore, the ability to be holy from the beginning was spoken into our very being. God speaks and we are. Therefore, as children of God, when He spoke for us to be holy, than we are!
